Basic History and Information

Basic History

The Unimaculata Betta's origin is in Borneo, Mayalsia. They are not like your Betta Splendens (Ones you see at local pet store in cups) As they are mouth brooding fish. They tumble eggs in their mouth and hatch them. They are know as the most easiest rare fish to breed after guppies (seriously). Found and collected in the wild. This strain has been imported to The United States and has been bred in Utah tap water. This Betta is the one YOU NEED if you want to keep rare and easy species with lots of personality.

Care
  • Tank Setup:

    • Tank Size:

      • A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a pair.

      • If you plan to keep a group, a 40-gallon tank or larger is recommended.

    • Habitat:

      • Mimic their natural environment with densely planted tanks, including caves and hiding spots.

      • Use driftwood and leaf litter to create a natural, comfortable environment.

      • Dim lighting is preferred.

      • A well fitted lid is very important, as these fish are excellent jumpers.

  • Water Conditions:

    • Temperature:

      • Maintain a water temperature between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

    • pH:

      • They prefer slightly acidic water, with a pH range of 5.0 to 7.0.

      • Tannins from adding botanicals like Indian almond leaves are very beneficial.

    • Filtration:

      • Gentle filtration is essential to maintain clean water.

  • Diet:

    • Betta unimaculata are carnivorous.

    • Offer a varied diet of:

      • Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

      • High-quality small pellets.

  • Behavior and Compatibility:

    • They are generally peaceful, but males can be territorial, especially during breeding.

    • They can be kept in community tanks with other peaceful, similarly sized fish.

    • Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species.

  • Breeding:

    • Betta unimaculata are mouthbrooders, meaning the male carries the fertilized eggs in his mouth until they hatch.

    • Successful breeding requires stable water conditions and careful monitoring.

  • Important considerations:

    • It is important to remember that wild bettas can be more susceptible to disease than domestic bettas. Stress from poor water quality, or unstable conditions can lead to illness. So maintaining a stable healthy aquarium is very important.

    • When adding new fish to a tank, quarantine them first, to prevent the spread of disease.
